Geared up for Duke of Edinburgh

Various young people in the local area spanning from Weymouth to Gillingham have been awarded grants towards their Duke of Edinburgh Awards.

A pupil from Wey Valley School is using the grant to purchase equipment for an 18-week Army preparation course at Kingston Maurward College working towards his DoE Gold Award and hopes to pursue a career in the forces.

Another young person is looking to achieve her Gold DoE award and has completed her Bronze already, encompassing competitive swimming, volunteering at a care home and using skills to apply natural horsemanship. She aims to enhance her knowledge in outdoor activities such as map reading, fitness and social skills.

Another pupil from Wey Valley School is working towards his DoE Bronze Award travelling to Nepal in December this year where he will spend a week trekking in the Himalayan Mountains and 10 days teaching in the local school and helping in the village of Okhle providing help for the water project to get clean water for the surrounding villages.

Taekwondo is top of the agenda for one talented Wey Valley student. He’s achieved his Black belt 1st Dan grading and is ready to sit his 2nd Dan. He has been selected for the South West to compete in an international competition in Belfast working towards his Bronze DoE Award.
