The JTYAF is delighted to support the Hamworthy Fire Cadet Unit and has made a contribution of £1000 towards youth safety helmets. The current stock of helmets are ex-operational and having reached the end of their lifespan need to be replaced.

The Fire Cadet Scheme is a fabulous development programme for young people. The Fire and Rescue Service staff provide positive role models and give the cadets fantastic opportunities to participate in a wide range of activities. In order to take part in the practical activities, it is absolutely crucial that the PPE (personal protective equipment) provided is safe and the JTYAF was more than happy to help.

Young people aged 13 to 18 take part in this rewarding training scheme, which not only gives them the chance to develop and improve personal and social skills but also obtain certificates and accreditation.  Sessions are a mix of theory and practical activities, linked to the National Fire Cadet model, and it is delivered by specially trained firefighters, Fire and Rescue Service staff and volunteers. Each course lasts for 38 weeks.

It is designed to be fun, but it also challenges and develops the participants and supports their school and home lives by getting them to:

  • Work co-operatively within a team environment

  • Gain self-esteem and self-confidence

  • Improve communication skills

  • Adopt a new set of personal values

  • Understand the importance of safety issues and the consequences of anti-social behaviour

  • Consider their community and give up some free time to support through fundraising or practical activities
